Enhancing a Torsion Garage Door Springs

1. Close your garage doors.

2. Secure the door. 

Place a C-clamp, or set of locking levers, on the tracks of your garage door above the roller at its bottom. This will prevent the door from opening while you adjust the tension.

3. Find your winding cone.

 Follow the stream from the stationary center plate until it reaches the end. The cone is held in place by an elongated portion near the end. Four holes will be drilled into the cone to distribute the weight evenly. Two set screws are used to secure the spring on the shaft at the center.

* Adjust the tension of the spring by inserting a winding rod into the holes, and turning the cone in either one or the other direction.

4. Turn off the set screw.

For winding, insert the solid rod or winding cone through the hole at the bottom of your collar. The bar can be used to hold the cone in place. Next, loosen the screws.

Check the shaft for any areas that are not flattened or depressed. To ensure that the screws are held in place, you should make sure to adjust the shaft again.

5. Adjust the tension.

The bars should be placed in two holes on the cone. If the spring breaks, place your head and body so that they are not in direct contact with the bars. Always be ready to move quickly.

6 Adjust the tension.

Make sure the bars are properly installed. Then, manually turn the cone by 1/4. Turn the bars 90 degrees to find a 1/4 turn.

* To increase tension on doors that are slow to open or close, rotate the cone upwards in the exact same manner that the garage door cable runs across the pulley.

* If the door is too difficult to close or opens too quickly, wind the cone in the opposite direction of the direction that the cable for garage doors can pass through the pulley.

* You must follow these steps to determine the exact amount of adjustment you will need for your door. Then, test it. Keep going until you reach the desired tension.

7. Continue to extend the spring.

The lowest winding bar should remain in place. Next, remove the second bar. Measure 1/4 inch away from the cone’s top and mark it with a marker or masking tape. You can leave the bar in the hole at its bottom. Lift it up towards the ceiling and then to your center. When doing it:

* Continue to hold the bar up and over, then tap it with your second bar. It should be tapped just below the cone that winds. You should tap it away from the central plate and towards the marking on your shaft.

* Tap the bar until the spring reaches the shaft’s marking.

8. Make sure that the set screws are tightened. 

Once you have stretched the spring to 1/4″ in length, attach it using the one-bar and lock it to the shaft by tightening your set screws.

* If there are any screws on the shaft, make sure you replace them with flats.

9. Repeat the process on the other side.

Two springs are sometimes used in torsion spring mechanisms. One spring is on either side of the center plate. This is the case, you can repeat steps 4-8 on the second spring. To ensure equilibrium, tension springs must be adjusted in the same way.

10. Test your door.

You can remove any clamps, pliers, or clamps that hold the door in place. Then, test the door to verify that the tension is correct. You can go back to steps 4-10 until you find the right tension.

11. Lubricate your springs.

Lubricate all springs and bearings, hinges, and metal rollers twice a year with a lithium- or silicon-based spray. WD-40 is not recommended.
